The business clearly communicates all expenses to be paid by the volunteer during their participation in the programme

What does this mean?

  • The business needs to clearly communicate any expenses the volunteer will personally incur for the duration of the programme.
  • Confirmation of these expenses must be communicated in advance and in writing before a contract is signed.  This is to safeguard the volunteer against unforeseen expenses that they are not able to cover once they arrive.
  • Each expense must be itemised and be given in the local currency.  Assistance can be given to convert this to the volunteer’s local currency, but it is important to indicate that they cannot be protected against currency fluctuations.  The business should however ensure that the costs first indicated to the volunteer do not increase substantially above this for the duration of the programme.
