The business conducts a H&S risk assessment on all areas of the business

What does this mean?

  • The business needs to conduct a H&S risk assessment on the business and this can actually be done before writing the H&S policy as it is a good tool to use to inform the policy.
  • The H&S policy should also state how often a risk assessment should be done, which is at least once a year.
  • The risk assessment needs to be appropriate to the size and scope of your business and is necessary to help you to identify risks and put actions in place to mitigate these risks.
  • NB – after conducting the risk assessment you need to write an associated action plan to deal with any risks appropriately to ensure that the workplace is safe for both employees and customers.

What do I do?

While you can do the H&S risk assessment yourself, if you are unsure it is better to consult with a company that specialises in this to assist you.  Some examples of companies that could assist:

If you want to do it yourself, you can find a practical guide in the Resource Centre.

In the Template Portal you will also find an excel sheet that can be used to do a H&S risk assessment as well as the HIRA used to code it.
