The disposal of waste has minimal adverse effects on the local community as far as the disposal of waste is under the direct control of the business

What does this mean?

  • The business needs to ensure that any waste that it disposes of (over which it has direct control), has no negative effects on the local community.
  • This will be assessed through the Environmental Risk Assessment discussed in point D2.1 as well as through meetings and discussions with the local community
  • The outcomes of the ERA and these discussions will then be addressed in the EMP.
  • Businesses should also talk with their contractors and suppliers to ensure that they are also not disposing of waste in a manner that could affect the local community.  If possible, obtain proof from them that disposal is done at registered waste sites.
  • The business should also either involve itself directly in local community recycling programs or support these programs and initiatives as much as possible.
