Three leading South African tourism companies have joined the growing list of Fair Trade Tourism approved tour operators entitled to market Fair Trade Holidays. The three – Cape Town-based Livingstone Safaris, Southern Africa 360 and Journey in Style – embody a growing awareness amongst industry operators of the importance of sustainable, responsible tourism.

Tour operators who promote Fair Trade Holidays need to be approved by Fair Trade Tourism by pledging support for Fair Trade Tourism’s principles and agreeing to package and promote holidays in which at least 50% of the bednights featured are spent in tourism establishments that are certified by Fair Trade Tourism or by a mutually recognised certification scheme in Africa.

“Tour operators play a major role in influencing responsible travel through the holiday packages they design and offer to clients,” says Fair Trade Tourism managing director, Nivashnee Naidoo.

“We are delighted to welcome our newly approved operators on board and look forward to working with them to promote the Fair Trade Tourism and Fair Trade Holiday brands.”

Livingstone Safaris, offers extraordinary destinations and unique, special experiences tailor-made for clients throughout southern Africa. “We are excited about our journey ahead with Fair Trade Tourism,” says product and marketing manager Amy Knight-Dawson.

Southern Africa 360 has been a leading inbound South African tour operator since 2009. Specialising in luxury holidays on the sub-continent, the company prides itself on its ability to seamlessly co-ordinate and manage clients’ personal requirements.

Journey in Style was established in 1993 when founders Kevin and Fiona Record first lost their hearts to Mozambique. They dived in head-first to pioneer tourism in the remote Quirimbas Archipelago and realised their dream of establishing a truly sustainable lodge on Ibo Island. As a modern African safari operator, the company offers a smorgasbord of tour options to clients and assists in helping them build their dream safari.
