White Shark Projects

White Shark Projects is one of South Africa's leading shark cage diving operators helping to expand the understanding and appreciation of the ocean's apex marine predator - the great white shark. Offering exceptional professional, ethical and personalised services, the company offers guests the chance to experience the majesty of great white sharks first-hand in the waters off Gansbaai in the western Cape.

White Shark Projects has been pivotal in setting the benchmark for responsible tourism in the shark cage diving industry, sharing South Africa's natural and cultural riches whilst at the same time contributing positively to the preservation and growth of the local community and environment. The company supports sustainable job creation and upliftment projects and fosters ecological awareness in local schools. All staff have been recruited from the Gansbaai communities and have been trained in various fields. The staff also have a 25% share in the company.

One of the most successful local projects has been the White Shark Recycle Swop-Shop, which has been running for five years. Local school children collect rubbish and litter from the streets and in their homes for recycling. They earn points for recyclable materials which they "spend" in the Swop-Shop on much-needed school stationery or clothes. This project promotes recycling, environmental awareness, and self-reliance, and helps to provide for some of the basic needs of the children.
